Zanzibar's New Electric Buses: A 2026 Guide for Visitors
Zanzibar's public transport is changing. Alongside the island's new roads and flyover, the government has introduced quiet, zero-emission electric buses in Zanzibar Town. Here is what visitors need to know: where they go, what they cost, and when they are useful.
When did Zanzibar launch electric buses?
The first electric buses arrived at Malindi Port in January 2026. On 23 July 2026, President Dr Hussein Ali Mwinyi officially launched the service together with the new Malindi Bus Terminal, and commercial operations began on 1 August 2026. The project is coordinated by the Zanzibar Social Security Fund (ZSSF) with transport partners.

Routes and fares are as reported in local media at launch and may change as the network grows. Check with your hotel or at Malindi terminal before relying on a specific route.
Can tourists use the electric buses?
Yes. The buses are public, cheap and modern, and they run from fixed terminals. They are useful for short trips within Zanzibar Town, for example between Malindi (near the ferry port and Stone Town) and Mnazi Mmoja, or along the airport corridor if you travel light.
They are less useful for a typical beach holiday. The current network covers the urban area around Zanzibar Town only. There are no electric bus routes yet to Nungwi, Kendwa, Paje, Jambiani or Michamvi, and big suitcases are awkward on a city bus.

Best way to reach the beaches from the airport
Until the bus network reaches the coast, the easiest options from Zanzibar Airport are:
•Self-drive: collect your car at arrivals with our free airport car hire delivery. Prices start at USD 25 per day.
•Private transfer: a driver meets you and takes you to Nungwi, Jambiani or Paje.
•Mix both: use the electric bus in town, then rent a car for 2–3 beach days. A car also lets you reach Zanzibar's top attractions like Jozani Forest and The Rock on your own schedule.
