Do you actually need a 4x4 in Zanzibar?
Not for the main roads. Routes from Stone Town to the airport, Nungwi, Kendwa, Paje and Jambiani are paved, and a compact SUV like the Escudo or RAV4 handles them easily. Its higher ground clearance also helps on speed bumps, diversions around the new road works and sandy hotel lanes.
Choose a full 4x4 such as the Toyota Prado if your hotel is down a rough unpaved track, you travel in the rainy months (roughly March–May and November), you carry dive or surf gear, or you are a group of 6–7.
